BBC Radio 1's target audience is 15 to 29 and their remit is to inform, educate and entertain their audience. Since Nick Grimshaw's take over in 2012 listeners of radio 1 have been decreasing, they went from 5.5 million listeners per week to 4.93 million. There are many reasons for this decline. One of the reasons is the audience are turning away from live radio, due to new technologies, such as steaming services, like Spotify and Youtube, where the audience can listen to or watch whatever they want at any time as it isn't being played live, meaning it'll just be uploaded and can be used whenever. Another reason could be that some of their content doesn't appeal to their target audience or they simply don't find it entertaining enough to stay and listen to the show, for example Jon Richardson (a comedian) phoned in and was talking to Greg James making jokes, which the audience may not understand or may just not find funny, making them turn off the broadcast, as the aren't interested.

The radio has to now use multiple other sources to keep its audience entertained and to help grow its listeners. They use multiple types of social media, like Youtube, Twitter and Facebook. They now have around 5 million subscribers on Youtube, where they post funny videos, such as innuendo bingo with celebrities or host live lounges where celebrities come in and sing covers and their own songs live, which are then filmed and posted on their Youtube channel. This helps in the promotion of the radio show as Youtube is now a huge platform for the younger generations, which means that if they like what they see on Youtube they might be encouraged to listen to the Radio 1 show. Also the influence of well known celebrities may encourage a larger audience as people who are fans may be more likely to go and engage with the radio show just to listen to their favourite celebrities. They also have Twitter and Facebook pages to further promote their radio station and help grow the number of listeners, even the shows presenters like Gregg James have their own Twitter to engage more with their audience and give them the latest news on the show. They also try to be more engaging during the radio's broadcast. They play all of the biggest hits,of different genres, from the top charts, playing artists such as, Little Mix, Ariana Grande and many more, which increases their listeners as people will enjoy that sort of music and for any of their older viewers they still play some older songs, which makes it more inclusive. They also play many English artists, like Ed Sheeran and James Bay to promote a sense of British identity, which may appeal to certain viewers.
