Q.15 Shildrick and MacDonald (2007) suggested that the poor are ________  _____    _______________ (complete the sentence). Undeserving of sympathy.

Emily Sande, Heaven Music Video:

*Shows an underclass man,who sleeps on the street. This relates to Shildrick and MacDonald's theory as many people walk past him yet no one gives him sympathy and they just ignore him.
*Relates to the lyrics "when I'm laying on my back"
*It's a wide shot.

*Rough looking area, probably a council estate. Probably a working class family.
*Alvarado theory of pity is shown as the children have sad facial expressions.
*Wide shot is used to show all the children.

*This is a mid-shot with non-direct mode of address. It shows the man looking up, this could be a reference to him looking up to heaven, which relates back to the lyrics "oh heaven" which are constantly repeated. This shows him looking for hope.
*Looks working class
*Rough looking/poor

*Much brighter image as it reflects happiness not sadness
*counter-stereotypes that all working class people are miserable.
*Reflects Alvardo theory, shows humour/

*Much darker scene, could reflect danger, which relates to alvardo's theory of danger.
*Wide shot
*Background is out of focus
*Shows how theres a light at the end of the tunnel yet this person chose darkness
*Could be a criminal/drug dealer

*Harsh darkness, light switch could reflect that theres a chance of light in their life. Or they can't afford to pay the light bill, which shows the stereotype of working class people being poor.
*Stereotype of working class families being miserable
*Counter-stereotypes Shildrick and MacDonald's theory as the audience would feel sympathy for this child.

*The exposure is very high, the brightness of the background almost blends with the girls dress.
*White represents purity. The girl hugging her chest could represent vulnerability.

*Refers to the poor and underclass being homeless. They're using a child's blanket which could suggest that it was donated or found.
*They're in a field which suggests that they want to be away from people.

*This mid shot shows direct mode of address, this could intimidate the audience as the man is staring directly at them.
*He looks a little bit rough as he's not clean shaven and the darkness behind him could suggest danger.
*He stands out from the black background which lets the audience focus directly on him.

*The colours in this are very vibrant bringing a more positive vibe to the image.
*This is a mid shot from a low angle, which gives the audience the impression of looking up to her.
*It also refers to the lyrics "Oh heaven" as we get a good view of the sky, which could be a heaven reference.

*The colours are vibrant so they create a much more positive vibe.
*The girl could be of lower class as stereotypically they're delinquents and she's surrounded by vandalism, however the angle wings contradict this as they could once again be a heaven reference and suggest that she's actually a good person.

*The darkness could suggest danger, yet the red light represents lust and romance.
*The darkness of the background leaves the audience in the dark about whats happening in the the actual scene.

*This is a person who isn't of ethnic minority and they're in the light, which contrasts the scene of the black boy. This could suggest that white people are seen as stereotypically good compared to the black.

*This close up shot shows direct mode of address from the man, this focuses the audience on him and as he looks sad the audience could feel sympathy towards him.

*Refers to Butsch's theory of people being flawed as this is a reference to prostitution as she's going down a dark alley in a red dress, which could be seen as seductive. The darkness could reference danger.
*Shows how underclass need to go to desperate measures to support themselves.

*This is a close up of a man. He looks like he's of working class as he looks a bit rough.
*The direct mode of address creates sympathy from the audience.
