- The development of the game through technological change
Minecraft was created in 2009 by a Swedish game developer Markus Persson and later developed by Mojang and was then released in 2011. It is a sandbox game, which means that the player is in control of the game, allowing them to roam around and pick tasks. The game allows players to build with a variety of different blocks in a 3D generated world, requiring creativity from players. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. It's now a multi-platform game which is available on a range of different devices, such as Playstation, Phone and many more. It became the second most successful game in the world.
The production of minecraft was meant to be a simple creation which was done as a hobby, Markus even used characters from games he previously created. In 2011 the game was released and came to a huge success. It was a multiplayer game due to the use of the Java code, this code was simple which made it easy for gamers to contribute to the development of the program eliminating bugs and facilitating multiplayer capability. This was beneficial to Minecraft as it engaged users, giving them a sense of control as they could contribute to the evolution of the game. Later on in 2013 the game was sold to Microsoft, which is a big brand owning computer programs like, word and powerpoint, for $2.5 billion. The selling of Minecraft resulted in further developments, such as the use of a new and more complex code called code C++, which can be used for building higher-level applications, to communicate with network devices and computer network simulators as well as remote device systems and network management. This then allows the game to be used on multiple different platforms, as well as increasing the overall appearance of the game making it more sophisticated with better graphics. Microsoft did this to increase the market sales of the game. The game and technology carried on developing and by 2017 it became available on basically every device, from the PC, Playstations, Xbox, mobile phones and nintendo devices. This makes it hugely accessible to everyone. It was also recently introduced on the VR by Oculus, it's now one of the highest selling games on the VR, due to it being a different version of the game it attracts different audiences as its much more iterative, which is something some people may prefer. Also due to technological advances Microsoft encouraged game downloads instead of buying individual discs as it prevents piracy and is overall easier to download, as it means you can just log into your account on the device.
Minecraft has been marketed in many ways. To start off, Minecraft was only marketed through word of mouth, this means players spoke to and encouraged their friends to play, this meant minecraft didn't need to spend any money on marketing. Then as minecraft grew in popularity people began posting their own media from Minecraft. For example, Youtubers as big as Pewdiepie, who has 80Million subscribers post their own 'lets play' videos where they play the game creating episodes and story lines, whereas others make tips and tricks videos and some people even make parody videos to songs such as "Shape of you" by Ed Sheeran, where they use Minecraft to create a music video. People have even created their own Minecraft communities where they open up blogs and forums to share their work, as for tips and help other play. These are all examples of free marketing as Minecraft doesn't have to pay for the marketing, meaning they can invest more in other things like improving the software and graphics and bring out more versions.
The game now consists of many different versions, such as minecraft realms, which allows the player to do whatever they want like build worlds and create virtual spaces and then theres minecraft story mode, it's an episodic point-and-click graphic adventure video game. Its a episodic adventure game that tells a story. You have to talk to characters & solve puzzles to progress in the game. This widens the audience range as different people have different interests and the different versions will engage different types of audiences ranging from 6 years old upwards.
